Mortgage crisis and increased consumer spending
by PrimateDave ini just read this piece at financial armageddon: .
more about that 'healthy' consumer spendingi've highlighted posts at the market ticker, business insider's the money game, and housingwire which have suggested that one reason why americans can afford to keep on spending in the face of 20 percent underemployment and stagnant incomes is because many of them have decided to stop paying the mortgage.. now, yves smith, publisher of another one of my daily must-read blogs, naked capitalism, and author of econned, a great new book on how we got into the mess we are in, is also weighing in on the subject.
in the following excerpt from "strategic defaults increase consumer spending," yves reveals some of the eye-opening tidbits that others have passed along to her:.

local elder stops by for a casual visit
by SnakesInTheTower infirst of all, i never believe that any visit by an elder is truly casual.
this particular elder was one of my closest friends from the time i first met him in the lobby of bethel during a tour, to the time he moved here from uk, to the time i left his congo.
i posted elsewhere that he once came by the house and said "is there anything i can do to help you come back to the kh?

How Did You Find New Friends?
by daringhart13 ini'm painfully curious on this subject.. when you have devoted your entire life, your entire social circle, everything you know......to this religion....when you fade away, how did you make new friends?
how did you replace all those people you thought were your friends?.
on top of fading away....... i lost a 'relationship' with a 'sister' due to not wanting to continue as a jw.

Are you so faded that Actives no longer encourage but respect you?
by Wasanelder Once ini know it sounds strange but all the jw's i have contact with are no longer "encouraging" me to attend meetings.
in fact not one of them invited me to the memorial even though we had dinner together at my house three nights before.
i think i have them totally bamboozled with my reasoning why i don't attend.

No I don't believe anyone here has been permanently warped by the Borg any more than your parents could do the same to you.
by gubberningbody inyou are who you are so much more due to your own peculiar genetic inheritance, and this is what eventually prevails.. there was a longitudinal study i read a number of years ago that tested the idea that we all have inborn "happiness setpoints".
these people in the study were followed through 20-25 years and periodically examined as regards their self-reported measures of happiness.
the finding was that no matter what happened either positively or negatively in their lives, within 8-12 weeks they were universally back to their baseline.. this means a couple of things:.

My life on the Treadmill
by cult classic ini was born in 1970 to third generation jehovah's witnesses.
like all those born in, i was brought up without hope or guidance for a life in this world.
instead of being taught to be self sufficient and confident, i was trained to obey my parents without question (ephesians 6:1).

If You Weren't In Rapt Attention What Did You Think About During The Meetings?
by minimus ini used to think of leaving early.
at the end i started making excuses to leave (supposedly work related) so that i could just get out of there.
i wanted a drink!.
